What/where are good places to stop and see on the way down to Portland via the 101? I plan on stopping at the Astoria Column for sure, but I don’t have any other plans.

I’d be open to meeting anyone who was interested at the column and driving into Portland , but I don’t really have a timeline for that day other than the meeting plans later in the afternoon.

Haystack Rock is pretty iconic. But if you’d prefer a fun road, take the 202 from Astoria to the 47 towards Vernonia, then down to 26 and into Portland. It’s a favorite among motorcyclists.

Pittock Mansion in Portland is kind of neat. Council Crest park. Mt. Tabor.

Argh you had sent me a Discord (?) link about your visit but I haven’t even clicked on it. Is there an Oppo meetup happening?

I’m pretty neck deep in work and weekends have been a disaster trying to catch up on everything else (if I’m not working like I had to last minute last weekend), and we have some events the wife had promised to attend so doubt I’ll be able to make it to anything. But good to know if Oppo are doing something and somehow magically the stars align.

It’s been over a decade since I did the drive south from your direction in to Portland along the coast, can’t really remember much at all to recommend. I remember Cape Flattery being beautiful, but presumably pretty far out of the way from your route given the way you’re headed.

SR 47 + random roads off of it were my favorite part of driving between Portland and Seattle in the Golf R  last December.

Bugger. Sounds like a good time. We have some form of daycare/kindergarden meet and greet event Saturday night for the little one.

I’ll keep an eye on that thread to see if there’s a C&C or drive you guys end up doing.

They shot goonies and kindergarten cop in Astoria.  The library was made into the jail at the beginning. The bridge to Washington has been in x files and a shit load of other shows and movies. They had a great Mexican restaurant.

Also of note is that there’s an entire Goonies museum there in Astoria.

Cape Disappointment State Park in Washington just on the other side of the bridge into Astoria is great. Hit the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center first, which has a great view of the mouth of the Columbia River and the bridge.

If you take the 3rd St exit in Elma, then go south and turn right at Lambert Rd, you can get close to a very photogenic abandoned nuclear power plant that you can see from the highway.

Aberdeen is where Kurt Cobain grew up, so there are a couple stops there if you are into that.

There’s a decent taco shop for the middle of nowhere in South Bend, WA.

In Warrenton, OR  on Delaura Beach Lane (shortly after turning off Ridge Rd on the right) there’s a monument to where the US was shelled by a Japanese submarine. This was the only place a military installation in the contiguous 48 was attacked during WWII.

Sadly, there’s not a huge amount to do along that route...

That depends when you cut west. Coming from bc you could take the ferry to anacortes. You could also head west at deception pass from i- 5 and then drive the peninsula. If you have the time for it, i totally recommend it. Beautiful coastal scenery, and not much in the way of traffic this time of year.

That is new! When I was there, they didn’t play it up. T hat was around thanksgiving (US) in 1999 however... Yes, I am typing this from my retirement home bed, waiting for death to take my old ass out.... ;)

The Friends of the people I was with actually owned the house from Goonies, and the daughter was in Kindergarten Cop. I got the locals tour for it all.

A nd I remember the timing because I saw Sleepy Hollow in theater when I was there.

Make the trip 45 mins west of Portland to McMinnville, and check out the Evergreen Aviation museum. It is the final resting place of Howard Hughes’ spruce goose. Also a better aviation museum than the Smithsonian Air and Space. Then jump across the street to Jerry Trimbal Helicopters and take your first heli-pilot lesson. Have done this twice now, and am turning it into a yearly event.
